warm-up is not optional, sorry

Honestly the amount of times I've seen people walk in, do like 10 arm circles and then jump straight onto a barbell. I get it, you're short on time, the WOD looks brutal and you just want to crack on. But your body hasn't got the memo yet. I used to be exactly that person. Skipped the warm-up, went straight Rx, then wondered why my hips felt like concrete by Thursday. Took me a solid year of doing it wrong before I actually paid attention to what the coaches were saying. Basically what works for me now — and this is just what I've landed on, not gospel — is three layers. First just get warm, like actually warm. Row, skip, light jog, whatever. 3-4 minutes, nothing heroic. Then some mobility work on whatever you're using that session. Squatting? Spend time on your ankles and hips, not just a quick stretch. Pressing? Get those shoulders moving properly. And then the bit most beginners skip entirely — movement prep. So if the WOD has cleans, you do some with an empty bar. You're basically telling your nervous system what's coming. The whole thing takes maybe 12-15 minutes if you're focused. It's not glamorous and it won't feel productive but to be fair your first set will feel completely different. Less grinding, more like your body's actually cooperating. Mind you I still have days where I rush it and then pay for it mid-WOD. So yeah. Still learning.

warm skin literally flushes better during a session too, I'm not a dermatologist but the circulation difference when you actually warm up properly is noticeable

skipped it once too many times and ended up with a tweaked shoulder that set me back weeks, not worth it

aye the concrete hips thing is real, I feel that every time I skip even five minutes of mobility before a long run

does your skin feel noticeably drier after sessions where you skipped the warm-up vs when you didn't

took me embarrassingly long to realise a proper warm-up actually makes the session feel easier, not just safer
