banana oat balls — ten minutes, no oven

Made these before my session yesterday and honestly they did the job better than anything I've bought pre-packaged. Basically just: - 1 ripe banana, mashed - 80g rolled oats - 1 tbsp almond butter - 1 tsp matcha powder - pinch of salt - optional: dark chocolate chips if you're feeling it Mix, roll into balls, fridge for 20 mins. That's it. Makes about 8. Nutritionally speaking, you're getting slow-release carbs from the oats, a bit of fat and protein from the almond butter to slow digestion slightly — not too much though, you don't want to feel heavy going into a workout. The matcha gives you a gentle caffeine lift without the spike you'd get from coffee, which I find genuinely useful about 45 mins before training. Around 70–80 kcal per ball depending on size. The trick is not to make them too big. Two is enough pre-session, three if it's a long one.

I make something similar but hadn't thought to add matcha — might give that a go. Mine always end up a bit sticky if the banana's too ripe though, does that happen to you?

the banana + oat combo genuinely hits before a session, slow-release carbs without the heavy feeling

I'd eat these maybe 45–60 mins before, any closer and the oats sit heavy on me mid-session

same, 45 min is probably the sweet spot for most people — oats gastric emptying is slower than people expect
