always leave it too late with this
Right so every single year I tell myself I'll sort my summer routine before it gets warm. And every single year I end up with congested skin, a moisturiser that's suddenly way too heavy, and that lovely greasy mid-afternoon feeling. This year was no different tbh.
Basically what happens is my skin in winter gets quite dry so I pile on the richer stuff and it's fine. Then the temperature creeps up and I just... keep using the same things out of habit. Takes me about three weeks of feeling like my face is a chip pan before I actually do something about it.
What I've switched to now — and this is genuinely stuff that made a difference for me rather than just reading it in a magazine:
- Lighter moisturiser with SPF already in it. I know not everyone likes combo products but honestly it means I actually use it every day instead of skipping the SPF because I can't be bothered with two steps at 7am
- Dropped the cleansing balm for morning. I do still use it at night but in the morning I was basically applying oil to skin that was already dealing with heat and humidity. Switched to a gel cleanser and the difference was pretty immediate
- Niacinamide serum back in rotation. I use this more luteal phase anyway because my skin gets a bit reactive then, but in summer I find I want it more consistently because the heat makes everything a bit more inflamed-looking
- SPF reapplication. I'm dead serious that this took me until my mid-thirties to actually do properly. Tiny amount, press it in, don't rub. Fine.
I'm not doing anything dramatic. Same principles really, just lighter versions of everything. Skin feels less congested already.
Mind you I said the same thing last June and then went on a hen do and undid all of it in two days so. We'll see.
